Proto is founded by Curtis Matlock at the National Taiwan University while he studies Chinese on the country's Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.

Curtis Matlock founded Proto to deploy AI in underserved markets. He served in Canada's armed forces, graduated in political science at the Royal Military College of Canada, and studied Chinese at the National Taiwan University — the deployment that opens the timeline above. He leads Proto's social-impact work from his studies at the United Nations' International Labour Organisation in Turin.
